SALT LAKE CITY-  The Utah women’s cross country team will hit the road on Saturday to compete at the Pac-12 Conference Championships in Louisville, Colo. The Utes will compete in the six-kilometer race on the Coal Creek Golf Course beginning at 11:40 a.m. MT.

“We have a big challenge ahead of us this week,” Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. “This race will feature five-nationally ranked teams in the top-25, including top ranked Arizona. Hopefully, we can duplicate the performance we had a year ago, as we continue improving our program.”

“The race at altitude will help benefit us and Colorado,” Kepler continued. “Unfortunately, the half of the course that was cut featured more hills that I feel would have benefited us, but our kids are up for the challenge and it should be exciting.”

The race will feature a two- thousand meter loop that will be run three times. Originally, the course was scheduled to include the second half of the golf course, but due to large amounts of damage from flooding in the Boulder area earlier this year, the course had to be altered.

Nationally ranked teams competing on Saturday are: Arizona #1, Oregon #12, Washington #13, Colorado #16, Stanford #20 and Arizona State #26

Last Season at the Pac-12 Championships

After finishing eighth in their inaugural year of the Pac-12, the Utes earned seventh in 2012. Utah was led by All-American senior Amanda Mergaert’s sixth-place finish.  Returning leaders, Susannah Hurst posted a 28th-place time, followed by Andrea Chavez in 66th and Nicole Rietz in 79th. The team tallied 200 points to edge California and Arizona State in the team standings.
