SALT LAKE CITY -University of Utah cross country standouts Alyssa Abbott and Amanda Mergaert received All-Region accolades, the U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Monday.
"Amanda and Alyssa have led our team all year," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "Both have had outstanding seasons and represented our program at the highest level all year. Amanda beat 95% of the runners she competed against this year. Alyssa defeated just over 91% of her competitors this cross country season. Those are some very high numbers when you consider they ran at some of the most competitive meets in the country this year. Both are also terrific students. They are both extremely deserving of this honor and we are proud of them for earning it."
At the NCAA Mountain Region Championships last Saturday in Provo, Mergaert finished first for the Utes and ninth overall clocking a time of 21:14.5. Mergaert's performance earned an individual automatic qualifying bid for the NCAA Championships as well as All-Region honors.
In her final cross country race, senior Abbott recorded a season-best performance clocking a time of 21:29.8 to earn 14th place. Abbott's performance at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships capped off a great career that included a 76th place finish at the 2008 NCAA Championships.
To earn All-Region accolades, an athlete must finish in the top-25 spots in their respective region meets.
