Former Utah all-conference shortstop James Brooks is in his first year as a student assistant coach. Brooks was drafted in the 20th round to the Washington Nationals in 2012 (624th overall).

An honorable mention all-Pac-12 selection, Brooks hit .304 for the Utes as a senior in 2012, finishing second in the Pac-12 with 21 doubles. He was tied for fifth in the league with 10 home runs and 10th in the conference with a .529 slugging percentage.

Brooks was a second-team all-Mountain West Conference pick as a junior, finishing second in the league in batting average (.372). He was tied for eighth in the NCAA in doubles (26) and tied for second nationally in doubles per game (0.53).
