DAVIS, Calif. - The Utah baseball team closed out its four-game series against UC Davis with a 10-7 loss on Monday afternoon.
After each team scored a run in the first inning, Utah scored two runs in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. Wyler Smith hit an RBI triple after AJ Young led off the inning with a walk, and scored on an infield bunt from Tyler Yagi.
UC Davis took the lead with a three-run fourth inning and a four-run fifth inning, and added another run in the sixth to give the Aggies a 9-3 lead.
The Utes looked to make a rally in the eighth inning, as Young hit a two-run home run to left field. Smith attempted to keep the inning going with a single and Connor Eppard was hit by a pitch to put two on base before the Aggies got out of the inning with a ground out.
UC Davis added an insurance run in the eighth inning after a Utah throwing error, and the Utes again came back in the top of the ninth. With one out, Yagi hit an infield single and scored on a triple to center off the bat of TJ Bennett. Tyler Relf walked to put two on base before UC Davis made a pitching changed. Smith attempted to keep the offensive surge going for Utah with an RBI single up the middle before UC Davis was able to force a ground out.
Although Utah and UC Davis each had 12 hits on the day, the Utes committed five errors in the contest. Utah stranded nine on the base paths while UC Davis left eight runners on base.
"We didn't play our 'A' game today," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "It came down to not playing very good defense, and pitching from behind. Davis is a good hitting ball club. We have them a lot of opportunities with our defense. We pitched from behind more today in the middle innings than we have all weekend. They were able to capitalize on that. I am proud of the way we battled back - we had the tying run at the plate at the end of the game. Offensively, we swung the bats really well early and late, but we fizzled during the middle. It's hard to sweep on someone else's field."
Smith went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Utes at the plate, while Braden Anderson, Yagi, Bennett and Young each had two hits.
Utah returns to the diamond on Friday, March 1, for three games in Minneapolis, Minn., at the Dairy Queen Classic. The Utes will face Northern Illinois, Minnesota and Dartmouth.
