CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - A late comeback fell short for the Utah baseball team against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Islanders 7-5.

Down 7-3 going into the ninth inning, the Utes looked to make a rally as Connor Eppard and Josh Alexander led off the inning with back-to-back singles, while Ethan Leiter loaded the bases with a walk. Pinch-hitter Jo Jo Sharrar stepped to the plate and drove in two runs with a single through the left side to put the score at 7-5, still with no outs. Unfortunately that was the final hit the Utes would have in the contest, as the next three batters hit into outs to end the game.

Utah had to come from behind early, as A&M - Corpus Christi scored five runs in the first two innings. The Utes got on the board in the fifth, loading the bases with no one out after an Alexander single followed by Leiter reaching on an error and Ryan Cooperstone walking. James Brooks drove in two runs with a single up the middle. Tyson Gonzalez's sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third and although Parker Morin hit a sacrifice fly to score a third run of the inning, Shaun Cooper flied out to end the inning with the Utah deficit 5-3.

The Islanders added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 7-3 lead before the Utes late rally.

Ute starter Tanner Tripp threw four innings, allowing six runs (five earned) and 10 hits with three strikeouts. He earned the loss, going to 0-1 on the year. Brock Duke pitched 1 2/3 innings while Tyler Wagner struck out four in his 2 1/3 innings.

Alexander had two hits to lead the Utes at the plate.

Eric Weiss and Dan Sciantarelli each had three hits for the Islanders. Daniel Minor earned the win on the mound, striking out eight in seven innings pitched.

The Utes travel to Alabama next weekend for a three-game series at UAB.
