LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The University of Utah baseball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Sunday afternoon at Page Stadium. Loyola Marymount blew open a close game with a five-run sixth inning and took a 17-8 win in the third and final game of the series.

Loyola Marymount opened the scoring in the first with a quick 2-0 lead against Utah starter Matt Crockett. The Utes tied it in the top of the second when Doug Beck and Joe Mozeleski both scored to make it 2-2.

LMU answered quickly. The Lions scored single runs in the second and third, while tacking two on in the fourth to go on top 6-2. Utah cut its deficit in half, 6-3, when Tyler Kmetko led off with a sinlge and later scored in the fifth. But that was as close as the Utes would get.

Loyola Marymount exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth. The big blow was a James Cooper grand slam. The Lions led 11-3 after five frames.

Utah picked up its first home run of the season when John Welsh dropped a two-run bomb in the eighth. But that home run could only pull the Utes within four, 12-8. LMU squashed any hopes of a Utah comeback with another five-run inning in the bottom of the eighth, pulling away to the 17-8 win.

Crockett (0-3) tossed 2 2/3 innings for the Utes and took the loss. Lions' starter Brad Meyers (2-1) picked up the victory.

Utah is back in action again Tuesday, traveling to Cedar City, Utah for a twinbill against Southern Utah.
