HUNTSVILLE, Texas - An eight-run fifth inning led the Utah baseball team to a 9-7 victory over Sam Houston State, giving the Utes the series sweep over the Bearkats.

Utah (5-2) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, as Michael Beltran and C.J. Cron both walked to reach base and Beltran scored with Devin Walker's RBI single.

Both teams were held scoreless until the fifth inning as the Utes broke the game open with eight runs. Beltran had a two-RBI double while Mark-Jan Moorman and Cooper Blanc each singled in a pair of runs. Utah had six hits in the inning, going ahead 9-0.

Utah starter Rick Anton allowed just three hits over the first six innings.

Sam Houston State (0-7) cut into the lead in the seventh inning off a two-run home run from Ruston Harris. The Bearkats also made a big rally in the eighth inning, scoring five runs to cut the lead to 9-7 before reliever Tyler Andersen forced David Oney into a fly ball out to end the inning.

Brock Duke entered the game on the mound in the ninth and although he walked two batters with no outs, he got out of the jam with a strikeout and a ground out to end the game for his second save of the series.

Beltran, Walker, Blanc and Tyler Yagi each had two hits for Utah. Anton picked up his first win of the season, striking out four over seven innings.

"We pulled out to a 9-0 lead and held on," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We did a really nice job early on. Anton really pitched great through six innings and Brock got them to strand runners on base in the ninth. Nick Kuroczko really made a great play to end the game. It was a good effort. It was a good weekend for us."
