MINNEAPOLIS - The Utah baseball team opened the Dairy Queen Classic with a 6-1 win over Northern Illinois on Friday afternoon.

Utah scored its runs over six different innings. Braden Anderson, Konnor Armijo and Dallas Carroll each had two hits for the Utes. Anderson drove in two runs while Carroll scored twice.

Brock Duke picked up his second win of the season after pitching six innings with five strikeouts. He allowed one unearned run on five hits. Mitch Watrous threw two innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout, while Nick Green pitched the final inning with a strikeout.

"We grinded it out again today," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We didn't play as clean a game as we have been, but we did enough to win. I think we were a little tired from traveling yesterday, plus with the time change it was like a morning game. I don't think we were as sharp as we have been."

The Utes took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Cody Scaggari hit his first career home run over the left-field fence. Utah increased its lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning. Carroll led off the inning with a double to right center and after Cory Hunt walked, an error on a failed pickoff attempt on Hunt led to Carroll scoring.

Northern Illinois scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking advantage of a pair of leadoff walks and a passed ball that would lead to an RBI ground out.

The Utes continued to pull away as the game continued. Armijo hit an RBI double in the sixth inning. Singles from Hunt and Anderson led to a run in the seventh. Doubles off the bats of Armijo and Tyler Yagi scored a run in the eighth while Carroll's leadoff triple in the ninth led to him scoring on a sacrifice fly.

Northern Illinois had eight hits and stranded 11 runners on base throughout the game.

Utah continues at the Dairy Queen Classic on Saturday, March 2, at 6:35 p.m. CT against host Minnesota.
