ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Utah baseball team rattled off 16 hits en route to its third straight win, a 14-10 victory over Central Michigan at Dixie High School in St. George, Utah, this afternoon. With the win, the Utes improve to 4-8 on the year.
Freshman Travis Kohn (1-1) earned the win on the mound, pitching 4.0 innings. He gave up just one hit while striking out five and walking one.
Utah scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, two on an RBI-double by junior Matt Ciaramella, another on a one-run double by junior Tyson Olson. The Utes plated the other two runs on ground outs.
Central Michigan with eight runs on five hits (two doubles and three singles) in the top of the second to take an 8-5 lead.
The Utes cut the lead to two in the bottom of the inning when senior Jared Pena scored on a double play.
Central Michigan tied the game at 10 apiece in the top of the fourth with a solo homer and an RBI-double.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Utes took the lead for good when Pena hit an RBI-double, then advanced to third on a wild pitch and was brought home on a single by sophomore Ryan Khoury.
Utah plated a run in the seventh on a one-run single by Pena and another in the eighth on a solo homer by Olson for the 14-10 win.
In all, five Utes had multi-hit games, led by Pena, who was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with four runs and five RBI. Khoury was 2-for-3 on the day, while Olson, Westfall and freshman John Welsh were all 2-for-4. Olson also had two RBI.
