ARLINGTON, Texas - The Utah baseball team broke an 8-8 tie in the seventh inning to take a 9-8 victory over Abilene Christian on Saturday afternoon.
"It was a tough pitching day," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "The wind was blowing hard and it was really cold, so there was a lot of offense. We swung the bats really well, particularly early in the game. It was a fight all the way to the end. Nick Green was really good again with a five-out save. It was a good win."
Utah had a season-high 14 hits in the win, while the pitchers combined for a season-high 14 strikeouts.
Green threw 1 2/3 innings, earning his fifth save of the year. He struck out four of the six batters he faced. Dalton Carroll earned the start and pitched three innings, allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Luke West pitched four innings, striking out six and allowing four runs on five hits. Dylan Drachler also made a brief appearance.
With the game tied at 8-8 entering the bottom of the seventh, a pair of singles from Braden Anderson and Hunt and a walk to Kody Davis loaded the bases with no outs and led to a run when Bennett walked. An infield line drive and a pair of strikeouts got Abilene Christian out of the inning.
Most of the runs during the game came in bunches. Utah scored two runs on four hits in the first inning, which included RBI hits from Bennett and Helton. Bennett had an RBI double as part of two runs in the second.
Abilene Christian tied the game at 4-4 in the third, scoring four runs on five hits. Utah pulled back ahead in the third with a run off an RBI double from Larsen before the Wildcats again tied the game, scoring off a pair of doubles to make the score 5-5.
Utah looked to take control of the game in the fifth, scoring three runs on four hits. Schuman and Konnor Armijo each singled to lead off the inning, leading to an RBI single from Larsen and Hunt drove in two runs with a single. However, ACU rallied right back in the sixth inning, scoring three runs on three hits to put the score at 8-8.
Utah continues at the UT Arlington Tournament on Sunday, March 9, against Missouri State at 11:00 a.m. CT.
