ARLINGTON, Texas - The Utah baseball team completed the sweep of the UT Arlington Tournament with a 7-3 victory over Missouri State on Sunday afternoon.
The Utes held a slim lead most of the day before breaking the game open with a three-run ninth inning.
Bret Helton had a strong performance on the mound, picking up his second win of the year with an eight-strikeout performance over six innings. He allowed two runs on four hits. Josh Chapman pitched two innings, surrendering one run on two hits, and Nick Green closed out the ninth inning.
"We played good today, in all facets of the game," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "Bret did a really nice job pitching, Chapman was good and Green closed it out again. Offensively we were pretty good, and that three-run ninth inning was huge."
Utah took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after a walk and a pair of RBI singles from Larsen and Smith. Missouri State cut into that lead in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of a pair of walks before an RBI single scored a run. The Bears had the bases loaded with one out, but Helton got a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.
Utah increased its lead to 4-1 with a two-run fourth inning. Larsen led off the inning with a walk and a single off the bat of Smith put Larsen on third. A sacrifice fly from Schuman sent in the first run of the inning and Cody Scaggari added an RBI single to send home a run.
Utah broke the game open with a three-run ninth inning. A leadoff walk to Josh Rose along with back-to-back doubles from Kody Davis and Cory Hunt sent two runs across, while Larsen added an RBI single to put the Utes up 7-3.
Utah plays a single game against UT Arlington on Monday, March 10, at 1:00 p.m. CT.
