ST. GEORGE, Utah - The University of Utah baseball team split a doubleheader with Southern Utah at Bruce Hurst Field on the Dixie State College campus Thursday. The Utes (7-8) rallied for nine unanswered runs to claim game one in seven innings, 11-5. In game two, SUU (7-5) got a walk-off, two-run home run from Justin Sotelo to earn a split with a 12-10 10th-inning win in the nightcap.

"We weren't as sharp as we have been today," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "I like the way we battled back in both both games. We got key hits in both games, but we just didn't make some plays, defensively, in game two."

In game one, Utah was the first to light the scoreboard, scoring two runs in the fourth inning. SUU came back with a single run in its half of the fourth before erupting for four runs in the fifth. The Thunderbirds took a 5-2 lead.

Utah put together a four-run frame in the sixth. Joe Mozeleski drove in two runs in the spurt as the Utes reclaimed the lead, 6-5. The flood gates then opened for the Utes in the seventh. Utah scored five more runs in the inning, including a two-run triple from Erich Kemp, and the Utes cruised from there to the victory.

Utah tallied out 14 hits in game one, including a 3-for-3 effort from Jay Brossman with three runs scored. Mozeleski finished with two hits and three RBI. Ute reliever Brad DeVore (W, 2-1) pitched three innings of one-hit relief to pick up the win.

SUU tallied seven hits in the opener, two of which came from Sotelo's bat. The Thunderbirds' Kasey Hubbard (L, 1-2) pitched into the sixth and finished with six strikeouts, but surrendered six runs, five earned, on eight hits in a losing effort.

In game two, Utah jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning, scoring an unearned run in the third before plating two runs in the fourth on an Adam Frank double.

SUU pulled to within 3-2 in its half of the fourth. The Thunderbirds then put together another big fifth inning, which began with a Utah error. Southern Utah would plate six runs in the rally, all of them coming after two outs, including a three-run home run from Robbie Richards, as SUU jumped ahead at 8-3. Utah came back with single runs in the sixth and seventh frames to pull to within 8-5, but Richards answered with his second homer of the game in the seventh to pad the T-Bird lead to 9-5.

The Utes continued to pound the T-Bird bullpen. Utah pushed across two more runs in the eighth and pulled even at 10-10 on a three-run John Welsh homer with one out in the ninth. Utah had chance for more as the Utes proceeded to load the bases with two outs. But SUU reliever Dustin Wittwer induced an inning-ending groundout to preserve the tie.

In the T-Bird 10th-inning, Trever Dimick reached on a two-out single. Sotelo then drove Utah reliever Shad McCord's (L, 0-2) full-count fastball over the wall in right field to end the game.

SUU finished with 16 hits in the nightcap, including three hits apiece for Charlie Hahl, Oliverson and Wright, while Richards finished with four RBI. Wittwer (W, 1-0) grabbed his first win of the year. Brossman, Welsh and Mozeleski each posted three-hit efforts as Utah rapped out 17 hits, while Welsh and Corey Shimada drove in three runs apiece.

The two teams will wrap up the series with a single game Friday at 10:00 a.m. (MST), at Hurst Field.
