SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah baseball team (9-10) raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and held on to beat the New Mexico State Aggies, 6-4, at Cate Field on the campus of Salt Lake Community College this afternoon.

Five of Utah's first six batters crossed the plate in the first inning as the team built a 5-0 lead.

The Utes got their first run on the board thanks to Bret Baldwin's RBI triple to right field. It plated leadoff hitter Ryan Khoury who started it all off with a walk. A bases-loaded walk to Jay Brossman gave Utah a 2-0 lead while two wild pitches and an RBI single by Erich Kemp lifted the Utes to a 5-0 cushion.

Khoury led the Utes on the day, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI. He also homered in the eighth, a solo shot that gave Utah the insurmountable 6-4 lead.

Lucas Trinnaman got the start and went four innings. He allowed only two of NMSU's 11 hits, striking out two batters. Brad DeVore came on in the seventh inning to pick up his third save of the year. He allowed only three hits and one earned run.

The Aggies managed to cut the five-run deficit to one run with scores in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings. Two of their runs were solo home runs, one each from the bat of Brandon Lance in the fifth and Jason Long in the eighth.

Brian Sizemore got the nod for NMSU and is tagged with the loss. He only went two-thirds of an inning but surrendered five runs, two earned, on two hits. He walked four Ute batters to only one strikeout.

The Utes return to the diamond this weekend when they open a three-game series with Saint Mary's in California. The series starts on Friday and first pitch is at 3 p.m., on Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
