PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Utah baseball team clinched the series over Stanford with a 7-5 victory over the Cardinal on Sunday afternoon.

"For the first seven innings, we probably played the best baseball that we've played all the way around," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "Dalton [Carroll] was terrific, and although we took a blow in the eighth inning we held on and won as a team. It was huge to win on Sunday on the road."

Utah had a strong offensive performance, coming away with 14 hits. Braden Anderson and Kody Davis each went 4-for-4. Trey Nielsen hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning.

Dalton Carroll pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits with five strikeouts. He raises his record to 2-1 on the year. Nick Green pitched 2/3 of an inning. Chase Rezac entered briefly in the eighth inning while Josh Chapman pitched the final two innings and struck out two and allowed just two hits. He earned his second save of the year.

Utah took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after back-to-back doubles from Davis and Dallas Carroll. The Utes increased their lead to 3-0 in the third inning. Three-straight singles from Anderson, Davis and Dallas Carroll led to a run and Davis scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.

In the fifth inning, Anderson walked to lead off the inning and Davis beat out an infield bunt for a single to set up Nielsen's three-run homer, giving Utah a 6-0 lead.

Stanford got on the board in the fifth inning after Lonnie Kauppila led off the inning with a single and would later score on a ground out.

Utah got its run back in the seventh inning. A Tyler Yagi two-out single set up an RBI single off the bat of Konnor Armijo after a stolen base from Yagi, putting Utah's lead at 7-1.

Stanford made a rally in the eighth inning with the first four batters reaching base, cutting the lead to 7-3. Chapman was brought in and although two additional runners scored, the Utes maintained a 7-5 lead at the end of the inning.

Utah returns home to Salt Lake City to BYU on Tuesday, March 26, at 6:00 p.m. MT.
