SALT LAKE CITY - Utah junior TJ Bennett hit a walk-off single in the 10th inning to lift the Ute baseball team to a 5-4 victory over BYU on Thursday afternoon.

Utah led 1-0 most of the game after scoring a run in the fifth inning before BYU rallied in the top of the ninth to score four runs and take a 4-1 lead. Kelton Caldwell led off the inning with a home run and Adam Law hit a two-RBI triple in the inning for the Cougars.

The Utes rallied in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, 4-4. Trey Nielsen was hit by the pitch and Konnor Armijo singled to lead off the inning. Wyler Smith drove in the first run of the inning with a single up the middle. Pinch runner Cody Scaggari scored on a wild pitch, and Cory Hunt came through with an RBI triple for the game-tying run.

Although BYU put a runner on with two outs after a walk in the top of the 10th, reliever Josh Chapman forced a fly out to end the inning. With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Dallas Carroll reached base when he was hit by a pitch. Trey Nielsen reached on an error, allowing Carroll to get to third. Will Taylor was intentionally walked to load the bases before Bennett's hit to deep center field that send home Carroll for the game winning run.

"That was a great college baseball game," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "I'm really proud of our guys to come back the way that they did and tie it and then win it in the 10th. But that was a good baseball game, particularly for a Tuesday night. Our pitching got us out of a lot of jams. BYU played such great defense tonight, and held us to one run for eight innings. Hats off to them, they played great too."

 

 

Hunt went 4-for-4 with two RBI to lead Utah at the plate. He also drove in Utah's run in the fifth inning with an RBI single to drive in Bennett, who led off the inning by beating out an infield single. Bennett was 2-for-4 on the night.

The Utes used five pitchers, with Chapman picking up the win after throwing the final 1 2/3 innings. He allowed one hit, and raises his record to 3-1 on the year. Trey Nielsen pitched three innings, allowing one hit and striking out three, while Chase Rezac threw four innings with five strikeouts, allowing just two hits. Luke West pitched one inning and had two strikeouts, while Nick Green also made an appearance.

Utah out-hit BYU, 10-5. BYU turned three double plays on the night, while the Utes had one.

The Utes return to the diamond this weekend for a three-game series with Arizona beginning on Thursday, March 28, at 6:00 p.m. MST (7:00 p.m. MDT in Utah).
