TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning as the Utah baseball team fell to the Wildcats, 4-3, on Thursday evening.

Utah took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Kody Davis was hit by the pitch with one out and advanced to second on Dallas Carroll's single. Davis went to third on a wild pitch before the team executed a double steal with Carroll and Davis, sending Davis in to score.

Utah scored its second run of the game in the third inning. Davis hit a one-out triple down the left field line and scored on a bunt off the bat of Trey Nielsen.

Arizona scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. After the leadoff man reached base on an error, the Wildcats got three hits in the inning to push two runs across and tie the game at 2-2.

Arizona left the bases loaded in the fifth, and both teams scored a run in the sixth to keep the score tied. Leadoff hitter Trey Nielsen led off the inning when he reached on an error, and would score on Tyler Relf's single through the left side. Arizona was boosted by a one-out triple from Johnny Field, and he scored on a sacrifice fly.

Utah left two on base in the seventh inning, and Arizona took the lead for good in the seventh with an unearned run. The Wildcats had two hits and took advantage of an error on a bunt to score and take a 4-3 lead.

Utah was led at the plate by Davis, who went 2-for-3 on the night. Carroll, who left the game in the third inning due to injury, extended his hitting streak to eight games.

 

 

Mitch Watrous started the game for the Utes on the mound, pitching 4 2/3 innings and allowing two unearned runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Luke West threw 1 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while Nick Green threw two scoreless innings, allowing two hits with a strikeout.

Utah and Arizona play game two of the series on Friday, March 29, at 6:00 p.m. MST.
