BERKELEY, Calif. - For the second-straight game, the Utah baseball team fell to California by one run, 8-7 on Saturday afternoon.
Utah led 7-4 after a five-run fifth inning, and California scored a run in the fifth, two runs in the sixth and took the lead with a run in the seventh.
Bret Helton earned the start on the mound, throwing 2 2/3 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. Josh Chapman pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing a run, while Dylan Drachler allowed two runs on two hits over one inning. Dalton Carroll, who would earn the loss and fall to 1-2, pitched 2/3 of an inning and allow one run on two hits. Nick Green pitched a scoreless and hitless 1 1/3 innings.
Utah took a 2-0 lead with runs in the second and third innings. Bennett was issued a leadoff walk in the second, and scored when Armijo hit an RBI single that dropped into center field. Utah would leave the bases loaded after a walk and an error. In the third, Cory Hunt was hit by the pitch to lead off the inning, and he stole second but the wild throw on the play allowed him to advance to third. With the infield in, Bennett hit a single through the right side.
Cal looked to put a run on the board in the second, when Derek Campbell hit a high fly ball over the foul pole in left field. Although it was originally called a home run, the call was reversed after the umpires conferred. Campbell grounded out, and Kody Davis made a double play on a leaping catch to get out of the inning. The Bears would take a 4-2 lead with four runs in the bottom of the third, with six hits in the inning.
Cal got a run back in the fifth on a pair of singles and a stolen bases, while the Bears added two runs in the sixth after a leadoff base hit and a walk led to a two-RBI single. The game-winning run came with two outs in the seventh inning. After a two-out walk, a single to the gap in right center was nearly caught by Jones, but was just out of his reach, putting runners on the corners. A single through the left side was just out of range of the diving Hunt, scoring the game-winning run.
Utah returns to Smith's Ballpark for a three-game series with Arizona beginning on Friday, April 4, at 12:00 p.m. MT.
