SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team out-hit Southern Utah 10 to 7, but committed five errors en route to a 7-6 loss in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Ute Field this afternoon. With the loss, the Utes fall to 7-17 on the year.
Freshman Travis Kohn (1-4) suffered the loss on the mound. He pitched 3.0 innings, giving up two runs on two hits, while striking out two and walking one.
The Thunderbirds took an early lead, capitalizing on three Ute errors in the top of the first to plate two. They extended the lead to 5-0 in the third on a two-run triple and a passed ball.
Utah finally got on the board in the bottom of the inning when sophomore Ryan Khoury singled through the right side, plating two, then scored on an error by the SUU right fielder. Junior Matt Ciaramella then hit a solo homer to right field to make it a 5-4 ballgame.
The Utes tied it in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by senior Jared Pena.
After two scoreless innings, the Thunderbirds took the lead back in the top of the seventh on a throwing error and wild pitch.
Utah made it a one-run game in the bottom of the eighth when Ciaramella hit another solo homer, this time to center field, but that was as close as it would get.
Ciaramella finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Freshman Jake Waldram went 2-for-3 with one run, while Khoury was 2-for-4 with one run and two more driven in.
Utah hosts New Mexico for a three-game series this Thursday-Saturday, April 8-10, at Ute Field. The Thursday and Friday games start at 2 p.m., while Saturday's game begins at noon.
