SALT LAKE CITY - Six Utes had multi-hit games in an 18-8 rout over Southern Utah in the nightcap of a twinbill at Ute Field this afternoon. With the win, Utah moves to 16-16 on the season.

Sophomore Brett Sundberg (1-0), who was the Utes' designated hitter in the first game, got the win on the mound. He pitched three innings, giving up four runs (only one of which was earned) on three hits with four strikeouts.

Six other pitchers took to the mound for the Utes.

Southern Utah jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Utes came right back when senior Jake Jordison knocked a three-run homer to left center.

After a scoreless second, the Thunderbirds again took the lead on a one-run single and a run scored off a wild pitch.

The Utes took the lead for good in the bottom of the third with three runs, two unearned, to make the score 6-4.

Utah came alive in the fourth, scoring six runs off two singles, three doubles, a triple, a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.

After Southern Utah scored two more in the top of the fifth, the Utes added three in the bottom of the sixth on RBI-doubles by junior Cort Wilson and freshman Ryan Khoury, and a one-run single by junior Nate Schlieman.

The Thunderbirds again scored two runs in the top of the seventh to make it 15-8, but the Utes weren't done.

Jordison and junior Mike Westfall each hit back-to-back solo homers in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Eric Chevalier then singled to left field and advanced to third on an error by the Southern Utah shortstop. Wilson grounded out on the next play, but brought Chevalier home for the final run of the game.

 

 

Freshman Matt Anderson went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead the Utes. Jordison was 2-for-5 with the two home runs and five RBI, while Westfall was 2-for-4 with two three runs scored and two others driven in.

Sophomore Matt Ciaramella went 2-for-4, scoring three runs and driving in another. Wilson was 2-for-5 with three RBI and Schlieman was 2-for-5 with one RBI. Wilson and Schlieman both scored one run apiece.
