SALT LAKE CITY - Nick Kuroczko had two hits to lead Utah as the Ute baseball team was shut out by UNLV, 6-0, to open a three-game series against the Rebels on Friday, April 9.
UNLV scattered their six runs over five innings. Kyle Kretchmer and Robbie De La Cruz each hit solo home runs while Kretchmer also had a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to send in a run for UNLV.
Jordan Whatcott pitched 5.2 innings, allowing four runs and five walks with two strikeouts. He falls to 4-4 on the year. Stephen Streich pitched the final 3.1 innings in relief. He had five strikeouts.
Rebel starter Tanner Peters pitched a complete game for UNLV, striking out 10.
"Peters controlled the ball game tonight," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We had chances early in the game with men in scoring position, but we couldn't get that key hit. We have two games left and we have to take it one game at a time and play hard tomorrow."
Utah and UNLV play game two of the series on Saturday, April 10, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Spring Mobile Ballpark.
