SALT LAKE CITY - The Ute baseball team easily defeated New Mexico 10-2 in the third and final game of the series at Ute Field this afternoon. With the win, the Utes improve to 8-19 overall and 3-7 in Mountain West Conference play.
Senior Ben Buck collected the complete-game win on the mound, throwing all nine innings. He gave up two runs on six hits, while striking out two and walking one.
Utah scored first in the bottom of the second inning on a two-RBI single by junior Tyler Kay. New Mexico answered in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-1 game.
The Utes broke away in the bottom of the fourth, plating six. It started with a two-run homer to right center by senior Eric Chevalier. Then, with two outs, Kay and sophomore Ryan Khoury hit back-to-back base hits, followed by a Jay Brossman double down the left field line, scoring two more. Junior Matt Ciaramella followed with a long ball to right center, for two more runs, giving Utah an 8-1 lead.
After two scoreless innings, New Mexico scored its final run in the top of the seventh on an RBI-single.
Utah added runs in both the seventh and eighth innings on a Trevor Eastman sacrifice fly and a Kay one-run single for the 10-2 win.
Kay led the Utes at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one run and three RBI. Chevalier and Ciaramella were both 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, while Brossman was 2-for-5 with one run and two driven in.
Utah hosts Albertson College for a noon doubleheader next Tuesday, April 13, at Ute Field.
