CORVALLIS, Ore. - A four-run third inning lifted sixth-ranked Oregon State to a 4-1 win over Utah baseball in the series finale on Sunday.
Utah had two of its three hits in the game in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. AJ Young led off the inning with a double down the left field line and scored when Wyler Smith singled up the middle.
OSU left runners on base in the first two innings, and rallied with two outs in the third inning for five hits to score four runs. Beau Day hit a two-RBI double in the inning for the Beavers.
Trey Nielsen recorded a one-out single in the sixth inning and reached third after a stolen base and a wild pitch, but was stranded on base after a ground out. The Utes got out of a jam in the eighth inning, forcing OSU into leaving two runners on base after a leadoff single and two walks.
Tanner Banks earned the start for Utah, returning to the mound after sitting the past month with a broken finger. Banks pitched three innings, allowing four runs and seven hits and earning the loss. Joe Pond had six strikeouts over his 4 1/3 innings in relief, allowing three hits, while Nick Green pitched part of the eighth inning.
Oregon State pitcher Ben Wetzler pitched 6 1/3 innings, striking out eight in the win.
Utah travels to Orem for a midweek game against Utah Valley on Tuesday, April 16, at 6:00 p.m. MT.
