ALBUQUERQUE - The Utah baseball team completed a three-game sweep of New Mexico with a 9-3 win on Sunday afternoon.

Utah (16-13) got things started quickly with two runs in the first inning. James Brooks led off the game with a double. C.J. Cron was intentionally walked to put two on base before Shaun Cooper drove in a run with an RBI single. Cody Guymon sent another run in with a ground out.

The Utes put the game out of reach with a five-run second inning on a two-out rally. Brooks and Cron each had RBI singles while Cooper had a two-RBI triple, giving Utah a 7-0 lead.

New Mexico looked to put together a drive in the second inning, scoring two runs on three hits before Utah starter Brock Duke forced Kyle Stiner into a ground out.

After all the early scoring, both pitchers settled in and both offenses were unable to get anything going. Duke got New Mexico to strand runners on third in the fourth and fifth innings. Lobo starter Rudy Jaramillo was replaced by Richard Olson in the third inning, and he allowed no runs and two hits over five innings.

Duke, who allowed two runs on four hits over five innings, goes to 4-0 on the year with the win. He was replaced by Josh Chapman, who pitched the remaining four innings. Chapman allowed three hits, giving up one run in the ninth inning and earning his first save of the season.

Utah added two more runs in the top of the ninth on RBI singles from Cooper and Guymon.

Cooper and Brooks were both 3-for-4 on the afternoon, with Cooper driving in four runs. Cron was intentionally walked twice on a 1-for-3 day, scoring three runs.

"Anytime you go on the road and get three wins, you've done a good job," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We played pretty well today all the way around. Brock battled through five innings after a week off, and Chapman did a nice job getting quick outs after getting settled in. We really needed that today after yesterday's game - that was very important for us. Their reliever did a nice job against us and gave them a chance to get back in the game, but our pitching and defense did a stellar job and didn't let that happen."

Utah returns to the diamond for a non-conference tilt at Brigham Young on Tuesday, April 19. The game will be televised live on BYU-TV.
