PROVO, Utah - Behind a 15-hit outing, the Utah baseball team defeated BYU, 6-4, on Thursday evening.

The Utes (10-25) out-hit the Cougars, 15-7, but struggled with wild pitches, throwing six in the game. Utah had runners on base in every inning but the eighth.

Utah was led at the plate by Parker Morin and Shaun Cooper. Each player had three hits and drove in two runs each.

Utah used four pitchers, with Tony Vocca picking up the win after allowing two hits and one run over 2 2/3 innings, striking out four. Starter Ben Mordini threw 2 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits with four walks. Kesley Kondo pitched 2 1/3 shutout innings, allowing just two hits, while Tyler Wagner picked up his second save of the year after throwing 1 1/3 innings.

"The first five innings we probably swung the bats the best we have all year, which was really nice to see," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "Cooper and Parker really got it going today. Our bullpen of Vocca, Kesley and Wagner were terrific. Vocca was the best he's been in awhile tonight, and Wagner was back to his old self with a great sinker and slider. Maybe something clicked for us tonight."

The Utes got on the board in the first inning. James Brooks singled deep into the shortstop, scoring when Morin hit an RBI double into the gap in right center field. Cooper added two runs to the board with a two-run homer over the left field fence to give the Utes a 3-0 lead.

Utah increased that lead to 4-0 in the second inning after Ethan Leiter scored on a sacrifice fly from Brooks, although the Utes would leave the bases loaded in the inning.

BYU (17-14) got on the board in the bottom of the second, cutting the score to 4-1 after Austin Hall led off the inning being hit by the pitch and eventually scored on a passed ball.

Utah added another run in the top of the third on an RBI single from Leiter after Josh Alexander led off the inning with a double. The Cougars came back in the bottom of the inning to score two runs and cut the score to 5-3, with both runners crossing the plate on wild pitches.

BYU cut into the lead with a run in the seventh, as Dillon Robinson scored on an RBI single from Adam Law after Robinson hit a one-out triple in the inning.

Morin gave the Utes an insurance run with a home run deep over the right field fence in the top of the ninth inning.

BYU was led at the plate by Robinson and Wes Guenther, who each had two hits. Chris Capper earned the loss on the mound, allowing five runs on 12 hits with seven strikeouts.

Utah continues on the road this weekend against California, with the three-game series against the Bears beginning on Friday, April 20, at 2:30 p.m. PT.
