OREM, Utah - The Utah baseball team fell to Utah Valley, 12-8 in a high scoring affair as the two teams combined for 25 hits and eight errors on the night. Both teams fought windy conditions throughout the game.
Cody Scaggari led Utah at the plate with a 4-for-5 night, scoring two runs. Wyler Smith was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Max Schuman and TJ Bennett each drove in two runs and Kody Davis went 1-for-1 with four walks and three runs scored.
Bret Helton pitched five innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks. He falls to 2-4 on the year with the loss. Josh Chapman allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits over two innings, while Nick Green surrendered three runs (one earned) on two hits, pitching the eighth inning. Green struck out two.
Utah took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Scaggari hit a leadoff double that bounced over the third baseman's head and Davis walked to put two on base. Bennett scored Scaggari with a sacrifice fly and Smith hit an RBI single into center field and the throw home wasn't in time to make the tag on Davis.
Utah Valley scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead, which included an RBI triple and a two run home run, both as the wind was blowing out to right field.
Utah rallied back with a run in the top of the fifth after Smith led off the inning with a single and scored on a ground out, and took a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth after RBI hits from Schuman and Bennett.
The Utes cut the Wolverines lead to one in the top of the eighth with three runs. Josh Rose and Scaggari both singled to put runners at the corners and Davis followed with a single, and a throwing error allowed Scaggari to come in to score and Davis to move to third. Davis would score on a ground out to put the UVU lead at 9-8.
Utah Valley pulled back ahead in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three runs on two hits for a 12-8 lead.
Utah returns to action at Smith's Ballpark on with a four-game series against Nevada beginning on Friday, April 25, at 6:00 p.m. MT.
