SALT LAKE CITY - Arizona State scored four runs over the final three innings to defeat the Utah baseball team, 5-4 in 10 innings to open a three-game series against the Sun Devils.

Utah led 4-1 after a three-run sixth inning. ASU scored a run in the eighth inning, two in the ninth to tie the game at 4-4 and broke the tie with a run in the top of the 10th. Although Utah loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th, the Sun Devils got out of the inning with two strikeouts.

Mitch Watrous was solid on the mound for Utah over 7 2/3 innings, striking out nine and allowing two runs on eight hits. ASU's fourth-inning home run ended a 17-inning scoreless streak for Watrous, who last gave up a run in the first inning against Oregon State two weeks ago. He pitched eight shutout innings last week against USC. Joe Pond struck out one of the two batters he faced. Nick Green pitched one inning and struck out two. Luke West pitched the 10th inning and earned the loss.

Braden Anderson went 2-for-5 at the plate for Utah. Connor Eppard, who hit his first home run of the season, had two RBI on the night.

The Utes got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. TJ Bennett hit a triple to the gap in left center field and scored on a wild pitch to give Utah a 1-0 lead.

Arizona State tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning with a home run over the left field fence from Michael Benjamin.

The Utes took the lead again with a three-run fourth inning. Anderson led off the inning with a single and after moving over on a ground out from Tyler Relf, an RBI single from Trey Nielsen gave the Utes a 2-1 lead. Eppard put Utah up 4-1 with his two-run home run over the right field fence.



The Sun Devils cut Utah's lead to 4-2 in the eighth inning with a leadoff home run from Kasey Coffman. ASU continued its rally in the top of the ninth. After loading the bases with no outs after a single, a walk and an error, a sacrifice fly and RBI single led to two runs to tie the game at 4-4.

With two outs in the 10th inning after a single and a walk, ASU's Drew Stankiewicz gave the Sun Devils a 5-4 lead with an RBI single to center field.

In the bottom of the 10th, Cory Hunt led off the inning with a single up the middle that ricocheted off the pitcher. He moved over on Tyler Yagi's sacrifice bunt. Cody Scaggari hit a deep infield single to second base for a hit, sending Hunt to third. After a strikeout, Relf walked to load the bases before ASU pitcher Ryan Burr got another strikeout to end the game.

Utah and Arizona State continue the three-game series on Saturday, April 27, at 4:00 p.m. MT.
