OREM, Utah - The University of Utah baseball team overcame a 5-1 first-inning deficit against Utah Valley State College and took a 7-6 win in 10 innings Tuesday night at Parkway Crossing Stadium.
Utah (14-24) got a clutch, two-out, RBI single through the left side from right fielder Joe Mozeleski to drive in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th. Brian Lane, who tossed three scoreless innings of relief, allowed one harmless infield single in the bottom of the 10th to pick up the victory.
Third baseman Jay Brossman gave Utah a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the top of the first. But UVSC (14-32) put a five-spot on the board against Ute starter Jason Price in the bottom of the inning. Wolverine first baseman Trent Perry hit a towering grand slam in the inning. UVSC's other run came on a Kevin Hashimoto RBI single.
Utah pulled within one run in the top of the third. Designated hitter Jake Waldram scored on an RBI groundout from John Welsh. Shortstop Ryan Khoury then hit a two-run home run, plating Seth Tartler in front of him. Hashimoto nearly single-handedly got one run back for UVSC in the bottom of the fourth. Hashimoto led off with a single, stole second and third and later scored on a groundout. His run put UVSC on top 6-4.
Waldram walked to lead off the seventh inning and moved to third on a Seth Tartler double off the wall in left-center, which knocked UVSC reliever Brett Guerrero out of the game. Jed Jensen came in and picked up two quick outs. But Brossman pulled Utah even with a single up the middle, pushing Waldram and Tartler across to tie the contest at 6-6.
Four Utah relievers - Josh Madsen, Brian Hedman, Brandon Bailey and Lane - combined to allow just one run in 9 1/3 innings after Price's rocky start. Jed Jensen suffered the loss for UVSC. He was one of four Wolverine pitchers to see action. Jensen allowed just one run on five hits in four innings of work, while striking out five.
Brossman was 4-for-5 at the plate for the Utes, scoring two runs and tallying three RBIs. Tartler was 2-for-2 and crossed the plate twice. UVSC had three batters with two hits each - Eli Slesk, Cory Newton and Hashimoto.
Utah is in action again Friday for the first of a three-game Mountain West Conference series at New Mexico.
