Utah Baseball Falls Late to UCLA, 4-3

LOS ANGELES - UCLA broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Utah baseball team 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams scored two runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at 3-3. Each team had chances in the late innings. UCLA left two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh and the Utes also got out of a jam in the eighth inning as the Bruins left the bases loaded. Utah's Tyler Relf reached third in the top of the ninth after a leadoff walk, but was stranded on base.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, a single, a walk and a fielding error loaded the bases with Bruins, and the game-winning run scored on a sacrifice fly.

Relf drove in all three runs for Utah, going 3-for-3 on the day with a walk. Trey Nielsen also had two hits.

Utah starter Tanner Banks pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Joe Pond pitched two innings, allowing two hits with four strikeouts, while Nick Green pitched the final 1 1/3 innings and earned the loss. He allowed one unearned run and one hit, walking two and earned his first loss of the year.

UCLA took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after a pair of singles led to a run. Utah got on the board in the top of the fourth. Cory Hunt walked and Nielsen singled to put two runners on base, setting up an RBI single for Relf and tying the game at 1-1.

Each team scored two runs in the sixth inning to keep the game tied. Relf again came through with runners on base with a two-RBI single after Hunt and Nielsen led off the inning with back-to-back singles. UCLA got two runs in the bottom of the inning. After three-straight Bruin hits to lead off the inning, another run scored on a ground out, putting the score at 3-3.

 

 

Utah returns home on Tuesday, May 7, to face in-state rival BYU at 6:00 p.m. MT.
