SALT LAKE CITY - In the second half of a doubleheader at Franklin Covey Field this evening, the Utah baseball team earned its first shutout of the season, a 12-0 win over Air Force. With the win, the Utes improve to 16-27 overall and7-13 in Mountain West Conference play.

Junior Doug Mackay (3-6) earned the win on the mound, pitching a complete game two-hit shutout. In seven innings pitched, he struck out seven and walked just one.

Utah took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second when junior Tyson Olson tripled to right center, plating two. Nate Schlieman then tripled to center field, scoring another. Ryan Khoury then brought Schlieman home on a sacrifice fly.

The Utes added a run in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by senior Jared Pena to go up 5-0.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, freshman Jay Brossman tripled to left center, plating two runs.

In the seventh, senior Eric Chevalier led off with a triple. Pena followed with another triple, scoring one run. Senior Michael Westfall, Jr. then doubled to left field to score another run and give the Utes a 9-0 lead. Olson then struck out swinging, but the catcher dropped the ball and didn't make the throw to first. With runners at first and third, freshman John Welsh homered to left field, scoring three and ending the game, as both coaches agreed on a 10-run rule prior to the game.

Welsh led the Utes at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one run and three RBI. Pena was 2-for-4 with two runs and two driven in, while Brossman was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
