SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team won its fourth straight, an 11-3 victory over Air Force in the first half of a doubleheader at Franklin Covey Field this afternoon. With the win, Utah, which had 16 hits on the game, improves to 17-27 overall and 8-13 in Mountain West Conference play.
Senior Ben Buck (5-2) earned the win on the mound, throwing the complete game. He only gave up three runs after scattering 14 hits. He struck out four and walked three.
Utah scored early, plating one run on an RBI-double by senior Jared Pena in the top of the first. The Utes added another run in the second on a one-run double by sophomore shortstop Ryan Khoury to take 2-0 lead.
Air Force plated one run in the bottom of the second on an RBI-ground out. The Falcons tied it at two apiece in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI-double.
The Falcons took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, plating one run on a double play to go up 3-2.
The Utes added two more runs in the eighth when seniors Michael Westfall, Jr. and Tyson Olson led off with back-to-back doubles and were brought home on a John Welsh sacrifice fly and a base hit by catcher Nate Schlieman, making it a 8-3 game.
Utah put the game away for good in the ninth, scoring three runs on four hits, including a Welsh two-run triple for the 11-3 final.
The two teams play the second game of the twinbill at 5:40 p.m. this evening.
