SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team completed the five-game series sweep of Air Force with a 17-3 win in the series finale at Franklin Covey Field this afternoon. With the win, the Utes improve to 19-27 overall and 10-13 in Mountain West Conference play.

Junior Clay Westmoreland (3-5) earned the win on the mound. He pitched the complete seven-inning game, giving up three runs on six hits, while striking out seven.

Air Force took a quick 2-0 lead, plating two runs on four hits in the top of the first.

Utah took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by senior Jared Pena and a two-run base hit by senior Michael Westfall, Jr. The Utes added another run in the bottom of the second on an RBI-single by freshman Jay Brossman to take a 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Utah plated a run when junior Tyson Olson singled through the right side to put the Utes up 5-2.

The Falcons made it a 5-3 game in the top of the fourth on an RBI-single to left field.

The Utes broke free in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs on five hits, including a Pena RBI-double, a Westfall one-run single, an Olson RBI-double and a two-run double by senior Nate Schlieman to give Utah an 11-3 lead.

Utah had a six-run fifth, starting with a two-run homer by junior Matt Ciaramella. Later in the inning, freshman John Welsh doubled to right center, scoring two more. Shortstop Ryan Khoury finished off the scoring with a two-run double to left center to for the final score, 17-3.

 

 

Brossman led the Utes at the plate, going 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI. Westfall was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI, while Olson was 3-for-4 with two runs and two driven in. Welsh was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, Pena was 2-for-4 with one run and two driven in, while Chevalier was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
