SALT LAKE CITY - Utah infielder Cory Hunt hit a bases-loaded RBI single in the 13th inning as the Ute baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Kansas with a 7-6 victory on Monday afternoon.

The Utes (20-29) had rallied from a two-run deficit to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning before winning it in the 13th. Bret Helton led off the 13th inning with a single through the left side and TJ Bennett reached on an error by the first baseman. Kody Davis was hit by the pitch to load the bases with one out. After Wyler Smith hit a short fly ball that held the runners on base, Hunt hit a fly ball deep to right field that just went over the leaping outfielder's head for the victory.

Luke West earned the victory on the mound after pitching four innings, allowing no runs on five hits, striking out three. West raises his record to 4-2 on the year. Tanner Banks started the game, pitching five innings with five runs (four earned) on four hits, striking out two. Joe Pond threw 3 2/3 innings and had two strikeouts while Nick Green faced one batter in the ninth.

Utah was led at the plate by Tyler Relf, who went 3-for-6 on the day. Helton was 2-for-6 on the day. Braden Anderson drove in two runs for the Utes.

"A great comeback by our guys," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "Luke and all our relievers did a great job keeping us in the game. Connor Eppard and Bret Helton had some key hits for us in the ninth and 13th innings, and we finally got the key hit to end it from Cory Hunt."

Kansas took a 4-0 lead with two runs in the second and third innings. Alex DeLeon hit a two-run home run in the third for the Jayhawks.

Utah came back to tie the game with a four-run third inning. AJ Young and TJ Bennett both walked to lead off the inning and both runners would score on Anderson's two-RBI single. Hunt also walked and Dallas Carroll executed a hit-and-run to send Anderson home. Hunt would score on a ground out to tie the game.

Kansas took a 6-4 lead with two runs in the sixth inning. The Jayhawks loaded the bases with no outs after a double, walk and infield single, and a ground out and sacrifice fly led to two runs.

Kansas led 6-4 before the Utes rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. Relf and Helton singled to lead off the inning, and pinch hitter Tyler Yagi bunted and put runners at the corners after an out at second base. Relf scored on a ground out to cut the lead to one run. Pinch hitter Connor Eppard hit a high bouncing infield single to put runners at the corners, and Smith drove in the game-tying run with a slow infield single to score Yagi, as a tough throw by the second baseman was wide of its mark. The Jayhawks got out of the inning with a strikeout, pushing the game to extra innings.

Both teams had chances in extra innings. Each team left runners on in the 10th and 11th innings, while Kansas also stranded a runner in the 12th. The Jayhawks had two singles to lead off the 13th inning, but the Utes got a fly ball and double play to end the threat.

Utah closes out its season this weekend against top-10 team Oregon, with the three-game series in Salt Lake City beginning on Friday, May 24, at 6:00 p.m. MT.
