LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah baseball team led UNLV by a score of 6-4 in the sixth inning Friday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. But the Utes couldn't maintain their advantage as the Rebels came back to take a 9-7 win.
The victory clinched the MWC regular-season title for UNLV. With BYU's 12-1 loss to San Diego State earlier in the day, the Rebels also wrapped up the No. 1 seed in next week's Mountain West Conference Tournament. The MWC Tournament will be held at Franklin Covey Field Wednesday through Saturday.
Utah led 4-0 in Friday night's game with UNLV before the Rebels even came to the plate. John Welsh led off with an RBI single, followed by a Ryan Khoury two-run home run. Jay Brossman singled and later scored on a base knock off the bat of Clayne Garrett, who also scored in the inning.
The Rebels got three runs back in the bottom half of the first on a C.J. Lang solo homer and a two-run round-tripper from Justin Tellam.
Utah led 5-3 after two innings. Tyler Kay led off the second with a double and later scored on a double play. The Rebels pulled back within one run, 5-4, in the fourth on a Lang sacrifice fly. The Utes pushed their advantage to two again in the sixth. Garrett led off the frame with a walk and later scored on an Adam Frank groundout to make it 6-4.
But UNLV tallied three runs in the bottom of the frame off Utah reliever Matt Crockett, who took over for starter Jason Price in the fifth. Matt Fry delivered an RBI double for the Rebels, while Lang's run-scoring groundout tied the contest at 6-6. Later in the inning, Mike Cruz and Zeke Parraz went back-to-back with doubles to give the Rebels a 7-6 advantage.
Rebel relievers Wayne Foltin and Kyle Tabeek pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively. Tabeek retired Utah in order in the ninth and picked up his sixth save of the season. Crockett (4-9) suffered the loss for the Utes. He allowed five runs in 2 1/3 innings of work.
Joe Mozeleski was 4-for-4 at the plate for Utah, while Welsh was 3-for-5 with a run scored. Tyler Beranek led UNLV with a 3-for-3 performance, while Fry had two hits in three at-bats, with two RBIs.
The three-game series concludes Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. PDT.
