FULLERTON, Calif. - The Utah baseball team ended its season against Cal State Fullerton in the championship game of the NCAA Regional, falling 16-3 and closing the books on one of the best seasons in Ute history.
The Utes finish their season with a 28-31 record while Fullerton (45-14) moves on to the Super Regional round.
Utah was one of only two No. 4 seeds to make it to the sixth game of their regional. Army also reached the sixth game in the Austin regional, falling to Texas.
Tyler Yagi, who had nine hits during the tournament, including a 5-for-5 performance against Gonzaga, was named to the all-tournament team.
Utah scattered eight hits during the game, led by a pair of hits from Michael Beltran. C.J. Cron drove in two of the Utes runs, including a solo home run to right field in the fourth inning to get Utah on the board.
Utah took advantage of a pair of Fullerton errors to push a run across in the sixth inning. Yagi reached on a throwing error by the third baseman and Nick Kuroczko made it to first and then second on a fielding error by first baseman Jared Clark. Cron picked up his second RBI of the game with a ground out to short that scored Yagi.
Back-to-back hits by Kuroczko and pinch hitter Kyle Myers led to a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Kuroczko hit a one out single through the left side before Myers blasted a double off the wall in left field, moving Kuroczko to third. JoJo Sharrar reached on an error by the shortstop that allowed Kuroczko to score before the next two batters struck out, leaving Myers and Sharrar on base.
On the mound, Stephen Streich earned his first start of the season, pitching four innings. Robert Chimpky went two innings while Bennett Askew entered in the seventh and threw the final three innings.
