"These first couple of weeks are for continuing our preparation, getting new guys opportunities and formulating our lineups and pitching roles to make sure that we are ready to go when conference hits," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We want to see what matchups are going to be the best for us."
The Utes have taken trips to St. George two of the past three weekends to prepare for their first games.
"Last weekend went very well," Kinneberg said. "We got a lot of things accomplished - stretched out our pitchers, put finishing touches on and now it's time to start to develop game roles for everyone."
The Utes return 19 letterwinners from last year's 21-31 team, including all but two starters in the field. Leading the way for Utah is junior pitcher Mitch Watrous, who was an honorable mention all-Pac-12 selection last year. Other returners include starting pitchers Dalton Carroll and Tanner Banks along with relievers Nick Green, Luke West and Josh Chapman. Utah returns all but two starters in the field, including infielders Cory Hunt, Kody Davis and Dallas Carroll and outfielders Wyler Smith and Braden Anderson.
Sacramento State was selected to finish third in the Western Athletic Conference preseason poll. The Hornets bring back seven starting position players, top starting pitchers Brennan Leitao and Ty Nichols, and preseason All-American closer Sutter McLoughlin.
