The Utah baseball team (10-22, 3-9) travels to San Diego, Calif., for a three-game series at San Diego State (20-22, 9-4) this Friday-Sunday, April 23-25, at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Friday's game starts at 6 p.m., while the Saturday game begins at 1 p.m. and Sunday's game will be played at noon.

Utah Update
After leading for seven and a half innings, the Utes gave up four runs in the eighth inning en route to a 4-2 loss at the hands of Utah Valley State College in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon. Senior Ben Buck suffered the loss on the mound, falling to 1-2 on the year. He threw 7.2 innings, giving up four runs on 10 hits. He struck out a season-high seven batters and walked none. Freshman John Welsh led Utah at the plate, going 2-for-3, while senior Jared Pena went 2-for-4.

Scouting the Opposition
San Diego State (20-22, 9-4) went 1-2 in a three-game series against BYU last weekend. In the first game, SDSU jumped out to a 6-4 lead, but the Cougars plated a pair of runs in the seventh to send the game into extra innings. BYU went on to win 7-6 in 11 innings.

The second game of the series went to the Aztecs as they scored 10 runs in five innings. BYU made a small rally, but the Aztecs held off the Cougars and won 10-6.

San Diego State dropped the series finale 6-5 when BYU's Ben Saylor hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, allowing the Cougars to overcome a one-run deficit.

Chevalier's 32-Game MWC Hitting Streak Ends
Senior outfielder Eric Chevalier's 32-game MWC hitting streak came to an end as the right fielder went 0-for-3 vs. UNLV last Saturday. Chevalier had hits in each of the final 21 conference games last year and the first 11 this season.

Buck Named MWC Pitcher of the Week for April 5-11
Ben Buck was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for April 5-11. Buck, a senior from Thornton, Colo., went 1-0 in three appearances. In a doubleheader against Southern Utah, he pitched 2.0 innings of relief, giving up just two hits, while striking out three. He pitched one inning of relief in the second game of the series against the Lobos, giving up one hit. The following day, he threw a complete-game win, pitching all nine innings, giving up two runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits. For the week, Buck pitched 12.0 innings, giving up just one earned run on nine hits for 0.75 ERA.

Pena Named MWC Player of the Week for March 1-7
Senior shortstop Jared Pena was named the MWC Player of the Week for March 1-7 after leading the Utes to a 3-0 record on the week. Pena hit .571 with two doubles, a home run and six RBI on the week. He also had a stolen base on his only attempt. In the first game against Southern Utah, he went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. In the second game vs. the Thunderbirds, Pena was 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI. On Saturday, Pena was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, with four runs scored and five RBI.

Franklin Covey Field
Utah plays the majority of its conference home games at state-of-the-art Franklin Covey Field (15,500). The 13,000-seat facility (not including the general admission area) also serves as the home to Salt Lake's AAA baseball team, the Stingers, an affiliate of the Anaheim Angels.

Utah hosts Utah Valley State College for a 2 p.m. next Tuesday, April 27, at Ute Field.
