With the short-season leagues starting up following the baseball draft, UtahUtes.com catches up with all the former Utes who are currently in the minor leagues.
Stephen Fife is 5-4 with a 4.86 ERA in 14 games with the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes in the Dodgers organization. He is a member of the Dodgers 40-man roster.
C.J. Cron struggled early in the season at the plate for the Class-A Inland Empire 66ers of the Angels organization, but has been tearing it up as of late and is hitting .306 in 69 games with 15 doubles and 11 home runs with 60 RBI.
Jordan Whatcott started his season with the Class-A Clearwater Threshers of the Phillies organization, but after going 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in six games, he was quickly promoted to the Double-A Reading Phillies. With Reading, he is 1-0 with one save and a 2.54 ERA in 16 games, and has 25 strikeouts.
Four players who spent last season with the Utes recently embarked on their minor league careers. James Brooks (Washington Nationals) is with the Gulf Coast League Nationals. Tyler Wagner (Milwaukee Brewers) begins his career with the Helena Brewers in the Rookie Pioneer League, and Parker Morin (Kansas City Royals) is also in the Pioneer League with the Idaho Falls Chukars. All three players start their seasons on June 18th. Shaun Cooper's season with the Yakima Bears (Arizona Diamondbacks) began on Friday, June 16th. He is 2-for-4 in his first two games, including a home run.
