BEST START IN 54 YEARS: The Utes 12-0 record to open the season is the best start for a Utah Basketball team in 54 years. The 1943-44 team got off to a 13-0 start as did the 1939-40 squad. The 1943-44 bunch lost to Ft. Warren, 61-59 in the 14th game of the season while the 1939-40 team fell to Colorado 42-38 in game number 14. The 1943-44 team finished the season 21-4 while winning the NCAA Championship. The 1939-40 squad finished 18-4. The school record for consecutive games won is 17 set by the 1990-91 team. That streak went from Dec. 4 1990 when they beat Utah State 84-76 to Jan. 3, 1991 when they won at UTEP 78-68 to push their season record to 20-1. The streak was broken two days later in a 68-62 loss at New Mexico.
BEST UTE STARTS:
GAMES WON YEAR FINAL RECORD
16 1912-13 21-3
13 1939-40 18-4
13 1943-44 21-4
UTES ON A ROLL: The Utes have been on a roll the last couple of years.
They are off to a 12-0 start in the current season but dating back to last year Utah has won 26 of it's last 27 games. The only blemish was the 72-59 loss to Kentucky in the NCAA Regional Finals in San Jose. The last regular season loss for the Utes was an 87-71 defeat at New Mexico on Feb. 1, 1997.
DOLEAC DOIN' IT: MICHAEL DOLEAC is playing well for the Utes. The 6-11 senior is leading the Utes in scoring and rebounding for the season averaging 16.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. He is leading the WAC in free throw shooting hitting .883 (53-60) of his shots. He is also shooting .536 from the floor on the year and leads the team in blocks with 13. Doleac is in 17th place on the Ute career scoring chart with 1,163 career points. He needs 50 points to move into 16th
RICK'S REMARKS: ON THE UTES: "We are trying very hard defensively. I think our defense is pretty solid. I think rebounding wise we need to do a little better job, we have let our rebounding slip and we have to shoot the ball better at the free throw line. It's inexcusable for us to shoot 66 percent from the foul line and we can't expect to win shooting that percentage from the free throw line." ON BYU: " I think BYU has a very good club. Selleaze is an outstanding player. He was an outstanding junior college player and his reputation precedes him. He was a very highly recruited player and they also have four or five players on their roster that we tried to sign. We had Danny Bower visit as well as Weidauer and Jepsen and we looked at Jared Peterson. BYU has some very good players. They are talented and are playing very spirited. We expect it to be a very, very difficult game. I think BYU is playing outstanding basketball right now. I like the fact that they share the ball so well. They are very athletic and they have a nice club."
UTE NOTES: The University of Utah is the only Division I school in the country whose men's and women's basketball teams are unbeaten. The Ute men are 12-0 while the Ute women post a perfect 11-0 mark.
