Director of Basketball Operations Jon Dykema is in his fourth season with the University of Utah men's basketball program. He came to Utah after receiving his J.D. and M.B.A. in management from The University of Akron School of Law and Graduate Business Program in May of 2007. Dykema's duties include scheduling, budgeting, coordinating team travel, equipment management, and running the day-to-day operations of the program.
Dykema has more than seven years of college basketball experience. He served as a student manager for the Michigan State men's basketball team from 1999-2003 under head coach Tom Izzo. He was head manager his final two years as a student and was part the program's 2000 NCAA National Championship team. During his four years, Michigan State won two Big Ten regular season titles and reached the Final Four twice. In that role, Dykema helped facilitate practice sessions and assisted with film breakdown. As the head manager, he traveled with the team and oversaw a staff of underclassmen managers. He also was the Spartans' film-exchange coordinator for three seasons.
In addition to his work at MSU, Dykema has done two internships with the NFL's Detroit Lions. He was a football administration intern from June 2003 through June 2004 and a legal intern in the summer of 2005. His primary duties with the Lions included helping coordinate team travel, budgeting, assisting with gameday operations and working on salary cap projects. Dykema also did a legal internship with KMG Sports Management in 2005, where he conducted legal research, gathered information on potential clients and assisted with recruiting athletes to the agency. Additionally, he worked three summers as a student intern for the San Francisco 49ers from 2000-02.
During his time at The University of Akron, Dykema worked in the athletics compliance office, serving as a legal intern during the spring 2007 semester. Most recently, Dykema sat for the July 2010 Utah State Bar Exam. He was admitted to practice law in the state of Utah in October of 2010.
Dykema earned his bachelor's degree in general management from Michigan State in 2003. He is a native of Grand Rapids, Mich.
