Washington 57, Utah 53 - Postgame Quotes

Recap |  Box Score |  Notes

Utah Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak
"We battled really hard. We had some mental breakdowns and some game plan breakdowns that really hurt us. We missed some open shots at times. The one play I think of was really kind of a back breaker was when there was a couple minutes to go and they hit the big three with one second on the shot clock after we defended really well. It is a fine line and as I told the guys after the game, there are no little things. People think that a block out or remembering to do something is just a little thing. But when you add up all those little things over the course of a game...it ends up being a couple point game at the end. So we will get better. I was proud of their effort."

On the team's effort and hard work
"I started talking about that Thursday night and Friday with our guys. We haven't been a consistent team, where the effort has backed itself up. I didn't write `play hard' on the board pre-game, like I had done in all the other games. I am hoping that - because we are getting a little taste of it - you have to play hard and it is just a given, like putting on your shoes and getting dressed for the game. That is just something that goes without saying. So I challenged our guys tonight to prove it. It was a lot of fun to see our guys compete. Giving ourselves a chance to win down the stretch very much validated what was, in my mind, a very positive week, from Monday all the way through the final horn [today]."

"I can always handle it [a loss] when we play hard. That is not to say we don't have a lot of things to work on and there is going to be different challenges. I think we all know how it feels when you get shellacked and you aren't playing hard. Very rarely, if you look at games from my own kids going to play all the way up to the NBA, I would say eight or nine times out of 10, the team that plays the hardest ends up winning. You aren't going to win them all, but that is a way to get yourself a really good chance. And that is the thing that we need to bring, like I said, consistently. I'll take it, but I don't like to lose. I don't want people to feel like it's ok and [we're happy] with a consolation prize. But from a coach's perspective, all of our staff, when we don't have to talk about that kind of effort we can actually move on to diagramming some more plays and playing some more defense, and doing more things that are a lot more fun to do."

Senior guard Josh Watkins
"Their guys just hit tough shots at the end of the shot clock. We stuck to the game plan. We played hard to the end, 40 minutes of basketball, and their guys were just hitting tough shots, which gave them the lead. I am very happy with our effort though, we thought we could have won this game. But we just have to take the same intensity to Thursday when we play Stanford and just keep staying focused."

Washington Head Coach Lorenzo Romar
On Utah's effort
"The game didn't go the way Utah would have liked it to but I think they need to be very proud with the way they handled themselves this weekend. They could have had a sweep here. They could have won tonight. So we have to give them a lot of credit. They did a good job of putting themselves in a position where they could have won it and that is all you can ask for."

On main difference that gave Washington the win
"I thought if we would have played the way we have played in our previous road games, meaning that offensively rushing shots, taking quick shots, we probably would have gone down. I thought we were patient, as patient as we have been all year on the road with the basketball. Ultimately that was the difference in the game."
