Utah Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak

 Overall thoughts

“I thought that we got man-handled for the most part. They played really strong man-to-man defense. The aggressor won. They did a nice job coming in and they were greased up to get a road win.”

 On Utes’ defense

"Part of our game plan to try to keep the ball out of the paint because they were really good off the bounce and on the glass. But it’s almost like we needed to approach this game like they were great shooters.”

On having such a far spread compared to the last three games

“I’m tired of talking about what we did [in the past]. It was disappointing that we lost the game and didn’t play well. We’re not going to have the barometer be about what happened in the first three games. That’s all talk, and our guys know that talk is cheap… We just got whooped.”

On turnovers and margin of defeat

“Yeah, that’s very interesting. It was inability to complete shots at the basket- some open shots, certainly. But I give a lot of credit to their defense tonight. They’re not a turnover minded team, but at the point of attack it’s hard to get shots off against them. They’re physical on the perimeter, and they’ve got the shot blockers back there to clean some stuff up. Not a team that’s out in the passing lanes, but they draw the line in the sand and make it really hard to score baskets.”

On encouraging people to not lose faith in the team

“Keep the faith, the sun keeps coming up.”

Senior Jarred DuBois

On what happened tonight

“They came out and played a lot harder than us, and we didn’t respond- we usually do. We have to stop coming out and waiting- I feel like we take the first punch and then we try to react. We have to be the aggressor and come out and play flat out harder.”

On if this game meant something had to give with all the previous close losses

“Hopefully this is rock bottom for us. Sometimes that is good for you to get to this moment. It really shows what you’re made of.”

On what to do in order to bounce back for the next game

“Take a look in the mirror from top to bottom- from the coaches to our mangers. Look in the mirror and figure out what it is that we did in the past to win, and what we’re not doing now. Hopefully, as individuals we can look at ourselves and that will bring the team together.”

Senior Jason Washburn

 On what happened tonight

“I don’t have a definitive answer for that. Personally, I don’t think I came out to play the way I have been. My team needs me to do that, and I didn’t do it tonight. That’s the only thing I can speak on. My team plays hard and my coach coaches even harder.”

 On lack of defensive effort

“At times it seemed almost easy to them [USC]- and they were just in that kind of rhythm. I think it took a lot of wind out of our sails- our confidence. We depend on our defense to boost our offense.

USC Head Coach Kevin O’Neill

Overall thoughts

“We have been playing better since the Dayton game. We finally got some guard play tonight. I thought Jio Fontan controlled the whole game. We played well tonight especially offensively. Utah is a good team. They took Arizona, UCLA and Arizona State all to three point games. So it is a big win. It is part of the process of getting better. Every team is good in this league. Every stop is a hard stop and we are glad that we got the win. Now we need to go and build on that.”
