Recap |  Final Stats |  Notes

Utah Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak

On what happened in the first half

“I thought our intensity was fine but we were just not mentally strong tonight. We threw the ball to them on way too many occasions and that took the wind out our sails right away. I thought [Allen] Crabbe played really well for them tonight and we were just not as locked in defensively as we have been the last few games."

On improvements in the second half

"We had a better mindset in the second half and only committed two turnovers. Against Washington the other night, we earned it but tonight, we were floating on offense. It just seemed, we were just going through the motions tonight.”

On what the team can improve upon

“This is part of the process. We can’t come out and think about what we did in the last game. Tonight was humbling, and we were not as productive as we were in Seattle. That night we were clicking offensively, but tonight, there was no crispness. There was intensity, but we were not doing things we have been doing, like cutting hard. It is natural stuff, but we have to play harder offensively.”

Freshman Brandon Taylor

On how the team is handling things

“We are an improving basketball team, but we came out slow tonight. We are not doomed and we will just have to come out and play harder on Sunday.”

On how he felt the team played

“It was unacceptable tonight. I blame myself for not showing enough poise on the court. The lack of focus is what really led to the turnovers we committed in the first half. We were throwing the ball all over the place.”

On growing pains of the team

“I think it just goes with the process and there are going to be nights like this. We have had games before where we threw it all over the gym but we knew what we had to do. I believe we will clean it up  here and come out on Sunday ready to rock.”

Cal Head Coach Mike Montgomery

On the first half

“I thought we had really good defensive activity in the first half in particular. 15 steals is unheard of for us. We had really good focus and active hands created some turnovers which gave us the ability to get the ball and shoot some shots. With Brandon Smith coming back we moved the ball well and got a good performance off the bench. It was a good road win for us. We have been really struggling. Early on I thought we got really good shots and just couldn’t make any."

On Utah

I think Utah is playing very well. Larry has done a great job. Allen Crabbe was a tough match up for them. They went to a box and one for awhile and we got a little stagnant but Allen made some tough shots. We are a work in progress but we had a good team performance which is positive for us.”
