Utah Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak

Opening statement

“Four minutes to go and you lose the attacking mind set. You can talk about continuing to attack, pounding the ball inside but we were paralyzed. We need to work on game situations at the end. I thought we did a great job defensively and took a couple charges at the end that ended up being three-point plays. Obviously those turnovers on the baseline and dealing with the press break are things we need to work on. Thankfully, Glen made a couple free throws. It’s a learning experience. It’s one of the few times that it’s a learning experience for us when we didn't lose the game. We’re halfway through league play now and I’m thrilled to get the win on a big night here. It was Coach Majerus’ day and we had a ton of former players in attendance. I wish it would've been a little prettier there in the end, but we will take it.”

On what changed from last week

“We had a really good week of practice and our guys focused. With some starters that aren't usually in the lineup, I thought our guys covered the bases for those that were missing. Everyone stepped up and made some big plays today. Jeremy Olsen, I thought, was big for us in the post.”

On how his team defended CU

“On defense, I thought it was a combination of a couple of things. We were really good in our zone, and then pick-and-roll coverage. We've been trying to keep the ball on the one side of the floor. We've done it with a few of our opponents this year and we just thought Colorado was too dang good at getting the ball into the middle of the floor. Early on, I thought that was really big for us.”

Overall thoughts

“I’m not coming in here with ‘coulda shoulda woulda’ mentality. We made our run in the second half, we let them make theirs. I thought that at the end of the game our anxiety was a little unnecessary, but we played well enough to win. We pulled it out when it was important. Guys stepped up and hit big free throws. Guys stepped up, hit big shots and that’s how you win basketball games. We came in here confident and believing we could win. A lot of guys contributed and played hard. We got it done.”

Freshman Jeremy Olsen

On how he was able to get good looks offensively

“I just went in there and played hard. I was able to find some gaps in the defense and they were able to get me the ball on the block. Coach is always able to call some plays for me and I was able to finish.”

Colorado Head Coach Tad Boyle

“These are the games that you have to prepare yourself for. Our team worries about the wrong things. Every time I think that we have matured or turned a corner, something like this happens. We played poorly offensively and in the first half we were flat and did not have any sense of urgency. We did not make free throws really well and when you are on the road those are things that you have to do. You can talk about the last eight minutes all you want, but in the first 32 minutes we did not have a sense of urgency. I have the upmost respect for the Utah program and I think it is great what Larry is doing here, but for a team that has not won a home conference game to have their first one on the Buffs, we have to have more pride in ourselves than that. We have to come in more prepared and I take full responsibility for that.”
