Utah Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak

Opening comments

“I think 13-4 to close it out. We got stops and did a few things to change the pick and roll coverage. I think people got a glimpse of what Jahii Carson can do with the ball in his hands. I thought JD had a huge charge going down the stretch. We had a lot of energy and went with a smaller line up to match them. We got the defensive rebounds when they missed with the exception of the big fella’s tip in. More than anything, coming down Brandon wasn’t shooting the ball well and he makes a three pointer. The key to the game when you look back at it is that we made free throws.”

On holding ASU to 55 points each time they played

“I don’t know if it is so much the opponent. I told our seniors on Monday that we have four home games and three road games left and that there is no reason to wait for the Oregon game to have senior night. These guys want to finish on a good note and put a good finish on the season.”

“More than anything when you look at Arizona State, they average 70 points a game and we hold them to 55, it is a defensive situation for us. So our guys are buying into guarding them and take away some things. We had a good three days of practice and they keep buying into it.”

Feelings on winning

“We have learned a lot of lessons throughout the year. Credit to our guys, they stepped up and made free throws when they had to. There are a couple things I am thinking about. The players watching them have fun in the locker room after the game. They have been as resilient of a group that I have been around. I am thinking about the fans. We are trying to get it restored and games like this give us some momentum. Hopefully this is not just medicine for us, but for the fans and gain momentum to get this built again.”

Freshman Jordan Loveridge

Comments on the game

“The whole game was back and forth which we finally started getting some rebounds that we needed and were able to come down and make some shots. We through different looks at Carson, he never knew what was coming. So I think that he was always worrying about what we were going to do next, which gave us a big advantage.”

Senior Jason Washburn

Comments on the game

“We had a talk today in shoot around and we know where we sit in the Pac-12. That also makes us bad news for some losses for teams trying to get into the NCAA tournament that is just how our season has played out. And tonight we never gave up; our guys hit some big free throws down the stretch. JD came up with a clutch charge and I love the feeling of a win.”

On big performance

“ASU has some of the best one-on-one defensive players in the league. So they like to do a lot of man to man and I feel like I do well against that defense if I get the ball in the right place. That is what I did and felt things went my way tonight. My teammates kept pushing me and trying to get me the ball because of it I had a good game.”

Freshman Brandon Taylor

On free throws

“Before I shoot a free throw I think about the game of 21. This season I have been thinking about free throws way too much and when that happens you tend to not shoot how you want. So I just imagined it as a 21 game and shot it and I knew it would drop.”

Arizona State Head Coach Herb Sendek

On fighting to come back

“There were just things that didn’t make a whole lot of sense when we had fouled outside the lanes with 11 seconds on the shot clock, another foul at the end of the shot clock out front with the three seconds. I think that resulted in four points.  They [Utah] weren’t in the best of situations. But to their credit they made a nice three up top and then finished the game. We didn’t finish the game the way we needed to.”

On how disappointing this is combined with Colorado game

“It’s always [disappointing]. Not just now, but in the first game of the year, last game of the year. It’s always disappointing to not do the things that you expect to do. That doesn’t change in sports depending in sports depending on the game or the date- you’re always trying to do your best.”
