FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - Andre Miller scored 16 points, Michael Doleac added 14 and Rick Majerus earned his 300th coaching victory as No. 5 Utah beat Colorado State 60-48 Saturday night.
Majerus, 300-109 and 201-57 in nine years with the Utes, joined Vadel Peterson (384-224) and Jack Gardner (339-154) as the only coaches at Utah to reach 300 wins.
The Utes (21-2, 8-2) maintained it hold on second place in the Mountain Division of the WAC with a pressure defense that held Colorado State (19-5, 7-4) to its lowest point total since a 58-40 loss to Drake in 1991-92. The Rams lost to Utah for the ninth straight time.
James Smith led the Rams with 15 points. Four of CSU's five losses have come from New Mexico State and Utah, both top 15 teams. Utah last lost to Colorado State, 74-69, in Salt Lake City, in the 1993-94 season when the Rams swept the home-and-home meetings.
Defenses set the tone from the opening tip. Both teams reached season lows in scoring and shot 25 per cent in a first half where the Utes led 18-14.
Colorado State missed its first four shots and didn't score until 17:55 remained in the first half when Matt Barnett followed a miss with a layup to trail 4-2. Chilton connected on a pair of baskets, but Utah's bench countered with two layups by Britton Johnsen, a 3-pointer by Trace Caton and a tip-in by Doleac to gain its largest lead of the half, 16-9, with 7:35 left.
Smith brought Colorado State within 16-14 with a 3-pointer. Miller finished off a break with a layup and Utah's defense held the Rams without a point for the remainder of the half.
The Ute defensive stranglehold carried over into the second half, holding the Rams without a basket for the first three minutes. Mottola hit two free throws and Doleac and Miller had a basket each as Utah began to pull away 24-14.
Milton Palacio and Bryan Christiansen hit successive 3-pointers to get CSU within 36-28 with 9:01 left, but Miller responded with two jumpers and Jon Carlisle hit two free throws to put Utah back up 40-30.
Colorado State cut it to 42-35 with 6:36 to go on a basket by Christiansen and a 3-pointer by Jameel Mahmud, but Miller converted a layup and free throw to get Utah back its double-digit lead at 45-35. Utah led by double digits the rest of the way.
