SALT LAKE CITY - Dallin Bachynski led all scorers with 16 points as the Utah men's basketball team defeated Simon Fraser in an exhibition game, 71-36, at the Jon M. Huntsman Center Friday. Four Utes finished in double figures.
Bachynski, a sophomore center from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, was 7-of-8 from the floor and 2-of-3 from the free throw line. He also added six rebounds and blocked three shots.
Senior guard Jarred DuBois was the team's leading rebounder with eight boards, while scoring 14 points. Freshman forward Jordan Loveridge scored 13 points of 4-of-8 from the field and 5-of-6 at the charity stripe while pulling down seven rebounds in his first collegiate action. Senior center Jason Washburn turned in 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting while adding three rebounds and a blocked shot.
Utah's rebounding and defense spurred the dominant win as the Utes out-rebounded SFU, 57-35, and collected 22 offensive boards. The Ute Defense held Simon Fraser to just 19.4% shooting (12-of-62) for the game and out-scored the Clan 31-13 in the second half. Utah shot 42.9% for the game (27-of-63).
After taking a 40-23 lead at halftime, the Utes came started the second half on a 28-5 run over the first 13:12 of the second half to put stretch the lead to 40 points and put the game well out of reach.
Eleven players made their Utah debut as the rebuilt Runnin' Utes showcased their new squad. Returning players Washburn and senior guard Cedric Martin, who posted a game-high six assists, were in the starting lineup with newcomers DuBois, Loveridge and junior guard Glen Dean.
Simon Fraser's was led by Anto Olah, who posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while adding a pair of blocks. He was the only player in double figures for SFU.
