SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's basketball team (0-1) fell to Southwest Baptist (1-0) Saturday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in the season-opener for both teams. Utah's senior center Luke Nevill led all scorers with 28 points, one away from his career high.
The Bearcats' shooting was the story as they went 16-of-32 from three-point range and 27-of-64 (.422) overall. The Utes actually outshot SBU from the floor (24-of-54 FG, .444), but came up short at the free-throw line, hitting on 27-of-38 attempts (.711).
Utah tied the game on freshman guard Jace Tavita's first career bucket, a layup with 3:57 to go, evening things at 70-70. A three-pointer by D'Ante Harris 10 seconds later gave the Bearcats back a lead they would never surrender.
After taking a 2-0 lead to start the game, Utah did not regain the advantage until a Nevill dunk made it 48-47 in Utah's favor with 16:13 left in the game. The lead then changed hands five more times, with Utah's largest margin reaching five points (54-49, 12:49 left). SBU extended it as far as seven points at 70-63 with 6:34 left to play before the Utes went on a 7-0 run to pull even.
Utah had the final shot of the game but a last-second, well-contested jumper by Borha came up short and SBU came away with the rebound.
Nevill posted a double-double for the Utes (28 pts, 14 rebs), coming up just one shy of his career-high in points and two shy of a career night for rebounds. His double-double effort was the 19th of his career. He went over 20 points for the 17th time and posted his 20th game in double-digit rebounds.
Two other Utes hit double digits in scoring as senior forward Shaun Green poured in 15 (4-8 FG, 2-5 3FG, 5-6 FT) and was a rebound away from his own double-double. Senior guard Lawrence Borha tallied 10 points (2-3 FG, 6-7 FT) in the contest.
SBU had five players in double-figures, led by Tomas Brock's 16 (6-11 FG, 4-7 3FG).
The Utes held a big advantage on the glass, grabbing 43 rebounds to SBU's 31. The Bearcats logged 17 assists while turning it over 11 times. Utah posted 14 assists but surrendered the ball 13 times. The Utes also blocked five SBU shots while having only one attempt of their own blocked.
Utah's next action will be at home against Wisconsin-Green Bay in the opening round of the Glenn Wilkes Classic, Tuesday, Nov. 18. Tipoff at the Jon M. Huntsman Center is slated for 7 p.m. MT
