SALT LAKE CITY - Utah junior wing Will Clyburn and junior guard Josh Watkins both surpassed the 20-point mark to lead the University of Utah men's basketball team to an 80-71 victory against Montana Wednesday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.

Utah (2-0) shot 45.3% from the field (24-for-53) while Montana registered 41.4% (24-for-58). The Utes connected on 77.8% (28-of-36) from the free throw line compared to 65.4% (17-of-26) for the Grizzlies.

Will Clyburn scored a team-high and tied for game-high honors with 21 points on a 5-of-12 effort from the floor. Clyburn was 9-of-11 from the free throw line and went 2-for-5 from 3-point range.

Josh Watkins totaled 20 points after hitting seven of his 14 field goal attempts. He went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe and also dished three assists and grabbed three rebounds.

The last time two Utah players scored 20 or more was at Pepperdine on Dec. 23, 2009. Both Clyburn and Josh Watkins have reached double-digits in points in their first two regular-season appearances as Utes.

Jay Watkins poured in 18 points after a 6-of-11 effort. He was 6-of-8 at the line and corralled five rebounds. Jason Washburn was the fourth Ute in double-figures with 10 points after connecting on four of seven attempts. Washburn set a new career high by grabbing a team-high eight boards. Antonio DiMaria went 4-for-5 at the free throw line and totaled seven points.

Utah's junior center David Foster had a pair of blocks and now has 127 over his career, which moved him into third place in school history ahead of Keith Van Horn (1994-97). Foster is now 31 away from tying Mitch Smith (1985-89) for second place in Utah history.



Montana held a 9-8 lead before Utah pieced together a 7-0 run that featured a lay-in and 3-poiner by Josh Watkins as well as a lay-up by Jay Watkins to take a 15-9 lead. The Grizzlies battled back with eight consecutive points for a 17-15 advantage before Utah stormed back with an 11-3 spurt to go ahead 26-20. The Utes extended their lead to 11 points at 39-28 thanks to a 9-1 run that included a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer by DiMaria.

Both Jay and Josh Watkins hit three of his first four shots as Utah started the game 10-of-18 (55.6 %) from the field as the team ended the half shooting 50.0% (14-of-28) as a team, compared to 28.6% (8-of-28) for the Grizzlies. Josh Watkins posted 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor. Jay Watkins scored nine points off 3-of-6 shooting and also grabbed four rebounds. DiMaria and Clyburn both registered seven points apiece while Washburn grabbed a team-high five rebounds to go with five points.

Utah led 44-34 early in the second half before a 13-3 run in just over three minutes gave the Utes control of the game and their largest lead of the contest at 57-37. At the 11:21 mark, Montana scored 15 of the next 17 points to cut its deficit to six points. Fortunately, Montana was unable to get any closer and Utah managed to build its lead back to 12 points to secure the victory. The Utes were able to out-rebound the Grizzlies 25-16 and Clyburn poured in 14 second-half points, which included a 7-of-9 performance at the free throw line.

Utah has now won 12 consecutive games against Montana with the last meeting coming on Dec. 26, 1969 during the first season of the Huntsman Center.

This was Utah head coach Jim Boylen's 100th game at the helm of the Runnin' Utes. He now owns a 58-42 (.580) career record.

Montana (0-2) was led by a game-high-tying 21 points from Will Cherry. Kareem Jamar posted a solid all-around performance with 14 points and nine rebounds.

The Utes host Weber State Saturday at 4 p.m., in the Huntsman Center.
