SALT LAKE CITY - Utah men's basketball will travel to back to the Bay Area for a first-round matchup in the National Invitational Tournament. The Utes will play at Saint Mary's on Tuesday with the game televised on ESPN2 at 9 p.m. MT
Utah is 14-2 all-time against the Gaels, winning the only meeting in Moraga back in the 2001-02 season, 41-35.
Utah is 11-10 all-time in NIT and 0-1 against foes from the West Coast Conference having lost to San Francisco during the 1949 quarterfinals, 64-63.
Utah won the NIT in 1947 as Vadal Peterson's team trumped Kentucky 49-45, behind the play of MVP Vern Gardner. The Utes reached the NIT Championship again in 1974, but fell to Purdue. Despite the loss, Mike Sojourner was named MVP
In 1992, Utah lost in the semifinals to Notre Dame but won the third-place game against Florida. That was the last time the Utes won a game in the NIT and the team has only been back once since then, in 2001.
Utah is in the NIT for the 12th time, tied with Arizona State for the most of any Pac-12 school. The Utes are also one of five Pac-12 teams to win the championship, including Stanford in 2012.
The first three rounds of the NIT are hosted at the campus site of one of the participating teams. For each game, the higher-seeded team will have the first option host unless logistical circumstances preclude such an opportunity. First-round games will be played March 18 and 19. Second-round games can be played March 20-24 and quarterfinal games will be played March 25 and 26.
