Go Utes!
Moment No. 15 - Feb. 22, 1969

Nov. 13, 2007

The Utah basketball team was about to play its final game at Einar Nielsen Fieldhouse. The Utes had the perfect opponent for the end of an era - BYU. The Cougars had beaten Utah 73-67 in Provo earlier in the season.

There had been 30 years of absolutely fantastic basketball played in Einar Nielsen Fieldhouse. The 5,000-seat arena was sold out. There were two Ute fan brothers, known affectionately as "The Animals," who were climbing the chain link fence that separated the court and the fans.

Big Jim Mahler, who was Utah's first 7-footer (even if that was fudging just a bit), took an elbow to the nose from BYU's Paul Ruffner during the contest. But Mahler had one of his best games as Ute, scoring 17 points. Kenny Gardner, one of the best Utah rebounders ever, added 16 points in the contest. Meanwhile, guard Bobby Martin was 6-of-6 from the free-throw line and finished with 12 points.

But it was Mike Newlin's night. The Ute star scored 37 points and Utah rolled to a 98-85 victory over BYU to close out the Einar Nielsen Fieldhouse's tenure as the home of Runnin' Ute basketball.

The next year, Utah would move to the 15,000-seat, state-of-the-art Special Events Center (now known as the Jon M. Huntsman Center).
